Taking care of utilities bills nowadays has become pretty easy. For example, you can pay at convenience stores (which are located everywhere) or Japan Post Office. There is even a specialized business service company called "GI Pay Bill", which, for a small fee, will collect and pay all of your utilities bills automatically (see link below). We understand that U.S. military-related customers, who rent the dwellings our company manages, sometimes have to go away on long deployments or home leave. In such situations, it is really important to make sure your bills will be paid while you are away. There was a case where for some reason a customer fell behind on paying for electricity. Over the course of several weeks, the electric power company sent three postcards to the customer's residence notifying/warning that if the bill wasn't paid the power would be cut off. The postcards were written in Japanese kanji and apparently the American customer ignored/discarded them -- and then departed for a lengthy vacation. Soon afterwards, the power was cut off. Thereafter, all of the food in the refrigerator rotted, and the when the customer returned home the house was filled with a really nasty/bad smell. The lesson from this story is that it is important to pay attention to the bills and postcards from utilities companies, which will show-up in your home's mailbox. If you have any questions about them, please don't hesitate to call us. Summertime in Japan is humid and special care must be taken to keep your dwelling cool and the air as fresh & dry as possible -- some related links are at the bottom. We hope you will find the best way to pay your bills and avoid any problems.
