Located a short walk from the main gate of Yokosuka Navy Base (CFAY) is an open paved space called "Shiyaku-sho Mae Koen" (市役所前公園), which in English means: "Park in Front of City Hall". True to its name, the park is located right across the street from the multi-story headquarters building of Yokosuka City Government (YCG). In addition to its main building downtown, YCG has branch offices located in the various districts around the city. It is one of the largest employers in the area -- over 3,300 people work for YGC. For lots more information about living in Yokosuka City, please click on the links provided below. As for the park, here is how the City's webpage describes it: "As a park in the center of the city, it is used for a variety of events. In order to achieve high land utilization and alleviate the shortage of parking space, a parking lot with a capacity of 320 cars is located underground. In addition, a fountain, public flower beds planted with seasonal flower seedlings, and shady wisteria trellises provide enjoyment and relaxation in the city." So, although there is not a green lawn area, the park is airy & well-maintained and there are areas to sit in the shade. Also, during the course of the year, various public events and festivals are conducted in the park. For example, usually during the month of August a "Bon Dance" festival will be held in the park (see the link at the bottom for more details) -- and such an event offers a great chance to experience traditional Japanese culture just a short distance from the main gate of the Navy Base. We hope you will have a chance to visit and enjoy Yokosuka's unique downtown park!
