Japanese people, like in other countries, have developed ways of viewing and coping with their living environment. Japan is a mountainous island country, full of volcanoes, and from time-to-time, large natural disasters occur -- such as earthquakes, typhoons, and flooding from heavy rains, etc. After such disasters, there are always damages to repair, clean-up & rebuilding tasks, and unfortunately, even some funerals must be held. So, based on this, over the centuries, Japanese people have learned about the unavoidable destructive power of nature, and that there is no point in crying about it -- instead, be practical and concentrate on survival & putting things back in order. There is a Japanese proverb from the olden days which goes as follows: 泣いて暮らすも一生、笑って暮らすも一生 ... (Naite kurasu mo issho, waratte kurasu mo issho) ... The literal translation is: "You can live your life crying, or you can live your life laughing" ... The meaning is that it is better to go joyfully through life without being too vexed by cares. Moving to a new home can be a stressful process, and even more so when it involves going overseas to a different country. Perhaps this proverb might be a helpful one for you. Of note, previous articles in our company's Staff Blog have introduced other bits & phrases of traditional Japanese wisdom -- they are linked below. We hope that you will enjoy living in your Japanese home, and if there is anything we can do to help, please contact us.
