初心忘れるべからず (Shoshin Wasureru bekarazu)

The Japanese have a saying which goes as follows: 初心忘れるべからず (Shoshin Wasureru bekarazu). "Shoshin" = original feelings or intention, and, "Wasureru bekazazu = do not forget. So, taken together, this proverb means that we should not forget our beginner’s spirit, or our original intention. We should always remember the excitement and humility of starting something new. As we immerse ourselves in new work, hobbies, relationships, etc., we tend to lose our excitement and energy that once motivated us, and instead become consumed by the level of effort required to keep progressing. For example, making the big decision to move your household overseas to Japan at first can be a positive and exciting experience, but, later on, the various tasks and complicated actions involved in the actual move can combine to cause some frustration or fatigue. So, as the Japanese proverb states, it is helpful for remind yourself of your 初心 (Shoshin), or original positive feelings about embarking on an adventurous journey to a new life and house in beautiful and exotic Japan.
