In past articles for our Staff Blog, we briefly described convenient and inexpensive places to go out and eat.  In Japan, they have come to be called "FAMI-RESU", which is short for "Family Restaurants".  (Note: See the links below for much more information.)  We recently visited a popular FAMI-RESU which mainly serves Italian-style food -- called: "Saizeriya".  Upon entering the restaurant, we were guided to our table.  Saizeriya offers numerous seating options with 2-person booths/tables, 4-person booths, and tables which can be arranged to seat larger groups.  We went there on a weekday evening, and it was pretty crowded, but the dining area was well-lit and had a spacious feel.  Saizeriya has a unique way of ordering your meal.  First, you consult a colorful menu with pictures of all the food items, which are labeled in both Japanese and English -- and each one is given a number.  Small paper order tickets and a pen are provided at your table.  As you decide on items or meals to order, write each of their numbers on the order ticket.  Once all the choices have been made and numbers recorded on the ticket, you press an electronic bell button, and the server will come to the table and verbally confirm the items.  After that, the food and drinks will soon appear one after another, as Saizeriya prides itself on providing quick service at economical prices.  Some of the items we ordered were: spaghetti, pizza, escargot, fresh-baked bread, penne pasta, roasted lamb, various salads and tiramisu for dessert.  Saizeriya also offered its own special and affordable brand of red wine, made in Italy, along with other options, as well as a free-refills drink bar.  If you would like to go to eat at Saizeriya, we recommend going to the restaurant located in Coaska Bayside Stores shopping mall, located close to Yokosuka Navy base (CFAY).  It tends to get crowded on weekends and during lunch and dinner timeframes (you cannot make reservations), so you may want to choose times when things are less busy.  We hope you will be able to enjoy this wonderful Japanese FAMI-RESU.
