There is an interesting historical and scenic green park in Yokosuka City called: "Tsuka-yama Koen" (塚山公園). Situated in Hemi District (辺見), the park is full of cherry blossom trees and is located on top of a hill (elevation 133 meters) overlooking Tokyo Bay. Keihin Kyuko's Anjinzuka Station (按針塚駅), which is three stops north of Yokosuka Chuo Station, is nearest to the park. Over 400 years ago, Hemi Village, on the Miura Peninsula, was part of a fief granted by the ruling "Shogun" Tokugawa Ieyasu to his special foreigner vassal, William Adams -- an Englishman who was initially shipwrecked in Japan and imprisoned, but thereafter slowly rose up to become a trusted advisor and eventually gained samurai status. The links below provide much more information about this incredible & fascinating real-life historical story. The character 塚 (Tsuka), used in the name of the park and the railway station, has the meaning of a burial/memorial mound, and refers to the gravestone monuments of William Adams and his wife, Oyuki, located on top of the hill. Of note, after Adams took ownership of Hemi in the early-1600s, a local temple, Jodo-ji (浄土寺) became associated with him. Jodo-ji, located a short distance from Keikyu Hemi Station, continues to be the "family temple" of William Adams (also known as Miura Anjin), and it preserves a few of his personal items as treasures. The temple annually hosts an "Anjin" memorial service and supports a large spring festival held in April up at the park -- to which representatives of the British and Dutch embassies (along with other VIPs) attend. We hope you will get a chance to visit this remarkable, historic area of Yokosuka. Written by Goodfield
