Yokosuka was established as a city in 1907 and currently has a population of around 380,000 people. Its governance is centered on an elected mayor serving as the chief executive and a unicameral city assembly (which has 39 members). In addition to the main headquarters building located downtown near the Navy base (CFAY), the city manages numerous branch offices and other administrative buildings in various locations. Yokosuka City government is one of the largest employers in the local area with over 3,300 employees. The city government's main missions are to promote & support its citizens' the welfare, safety, and quality of life. It is organized as follows:
-- Management and Planning: The Planning Coordination Division, Urban Strategy Division, and Digital Government Promotion Office, among others, envision the future based on a 2030 plan
-- Life and Welfare: Includes divisions such as the Welfare and Child Affairs Division of the Citizens Affairs Bureau.
-- Economic and Urban Affairs: Includes the Culture, Sports, and Tourism Division, Commercial Promotion Division, and Urban Development Policy Division.
-- Internal Management: Includes the General Affairs, Finance, and Tax Divisions.
Yokosuka City's main issues & challenges are:
