The month of April in Japan has the feeling of "a new beginning".  It is a time when the spring greenery reappears after the passing of winter, and the weather is generally pleasant.  Beginning in the end of March and continuing into early April, cherry blossom trees (桜, sakura) are blooming in Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula areas -- so, there are a lot of beautiful scenic views, and Japanese people will take photographs of the flowers and enjoy outdoors picnics.  There are also many larger festival events which are held to coincide with the blooming sakura trees.  Besides the seasonal shift, April is also a time of change for Japan's society.  For example, 01 April is the beginning of the Fiscal Year (年度, nendo) and new budgets and programs go into effect for government, businesses, and other organizations.  April is also the beginning of the school year, and students return to classes after their spring vacations (春休み, haru-yasumi).  During the second week of April in Yokosuka you can sometimes see a father and mother walking with their small child -- all of them formally attired in suit and dress -- as they are headed for their elementary school entrance ceremony (小学校 入学式, sho-gakko nyu-gaki-shiki) which is held for first grade students.  Going to elementary school is a big change for the first grader kids coming out of kindergartens -- i.e., their first step into the long process of learning how to become part of Japanese society -- so the entrance ceremony is handled as a special/formal & memorable occasion.  Finally, the end of April is highly anticipated, as that will be the time to enjoy "Golden Week" holidays (more information at the link below).  We hope you will have good experiences during the month of April in Japan.
