Yokosuka's Uraga District is very historic as it was the location of a Magistrate's Office, which was established in 1720 by the Tokugawa Shogunate government. Uraga is also the place where the U.S. Navy "Black Ships", commanded by Commodore Perry, first arrived in Japanese waters in 1853 (see the link below). In connection with the arrival of the Black Ships, a local Uraga citizen & samurai official, named Saburosuke Nakajima, became famous in Yokosuka's history, as follows. While Perry's four warships were anchored off Uraga, one of the officials who boarded the ships was Nakajima. Born in Uraga, he had been thoroughly trained in Japanese-style shipbuilding by his father and was keenly interested in any and all new developments in that field. His detailed observations of the Black Ships' interiors allowed him to gain an understanding of how they were built. After Perry returned to America, the Shogunate ordered Nakajima to build a Western-style warships. Nakajima immediately set up Japan's first real shipbuilding works in Uraga and set to work. A three-masted barque, called the "Ho-o Maru", was completed in just six months and was testament to the extent of the knowledge and expertise in shipbuilding Nakajima had acquired by then. Nakajima also played a leading role in the extensive repair of the Dutch-built "Kanrin Maru", which was carried out at a dry dock he built at Uraga. The Kanrin Maru is of historical significance as the ship that carried Shogunal officials across the Pacific for the ratification of the United States-Japan Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1860. The Uraga dock and shipyard was used thereafter to build and repair more than 1,000 civilian and naval ships, eventually becoming part of Sumitomo Corporation. Nowadays, the large/unique dry dock, made from bricks, can be visited in Uraga (see links at bottom). We hope you will have a chance to go see it.
