Linked at the bottom are a couple of articles from our Staff Blog which looked at doing laundry in a Japanese-style dwellings. Washing clothes and sheets, etc., is a never-ending task. In most American homes, the availability of more space, stronger/cheaper electrical power, and large washer/drier appliances has lessened "the burden" of doing the wash. For example, once a washing machine has finished with a load of laundry, the wet clothes are simply placed in the adjacent drying machine -- and while they are spinning, other chores can be done. It is a real time-saving convenience. However, in Japan, people mostly still have to hang-dry their laundry items. This can be additionally challenging when it is raining outside -- so, drying must be done indoors (called: Shitsu-nai-hoshi, 室内干し). When figuring out to do this, one of the first things to look for is where a clothes-hanging pole (Mono-hoshi-zao, 物干し竿) might be placed, for example, one end on top of a bookcase, and the other end on top of a doorframe across the room. Another option is to look for an open space or corner of a room where a clothes-drying rack can be unfolded & erected. Once you have a pole or rack in place, then it is just a matter of using traditional hangars, or what the Japanese call: "pinch hangars" (ピンチハンガー), which are foldable rectangular-shaped plastic hanging racks on which are suspended dozens of clothes pins. As can be imagined, on bad weather days, the inside of many Japanese houses or apartments can get filled up with laundry hanging here and there -- quite the sight for those not used to it.
