In this article we will take a brief look at the historic (衣笠) Kinugasa District in Yokosuka City. It is located away from the coast in the middle of the Miura Peninsula, in a green hilly area. It can be easily accessed via car, bus, or taxi. Also, Kinugasa Station is one stop away from JR Yokosuka Station. People have been living in Kinugasa for a very long time. The area is associated with the Miura samurai clan, which ruled the region from the late Heian to Muromachi periods (1100~1300) and laid the foundation for the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate. So, about 900 years ago, there was a samurai castle up on hill above the current train station. It is gone now and where it used to stand has been turned into a park. Kinugasa-yama Park was selected as one of “100 Famous Sakura Places in Japan” and approximately 2000 cheery blossom trees are in full bloom during the spring. In 1907, Kinugasa-yama Park planted the sakura together with the construction of the monument of those who died in the Russo-Japanese War. The park is a great place to go for hiking and relaxing in a green forest-like atmosphere. Another interesting thing about Kinugasa is its covered shopping street, or "shoten-gai" (商店街) which is located right around the JR train station. Kinugasa shoten-gai has a "retro" feel, as the architecture and atmosphere have not much changed since the 1960s~1970s. Walking and shopping there almost feels like stepping back in time. Although it is smaller than the downtown Mikasa shoten-gai (see links below), Kinugasa's shoten-gai has its own unique charm. We hope you will be able to visit and walk-around and shop in Kinugasa.
