Yokosuka City is located on the verdant Miura Peninsula, which is famous for farms which grow delicious vegetables and fruits all through the year. The Miura Peninsula area is blessed with a mild climate, and during different seasons various crops are grown. Local farmers sell and send most of their produce to markets up in the big cities like Yokohama and Tokyo, but it is also possible to buy their fresh fruit and vegetables here-and-there in small roadside shops/stands. One unique and enjoyable activity is offered at 津久井浜観光農園 "Tsukuihama Kanko Noen" (Tsukuihama Tourist Farm), where visitors can go out into the fields and orchards and hand pick produce on their own (see links below). From January to May, strawberries can be collected; September to November: sweet potatoes; and October to November: "Mikans" (Tangerines). A group from our company recently went to Tsukuihama Tourist Farm for みかん狩り ("Mikan-Gari" -- Tangerine picking). After checking-in at the storefront, we were directed to walk to one of many nearby small orchards. The beautiful medium-height green trees in the orchard were packed with easy-to-pick yellow and orange tangerines. A small pair of scissors was provided for cutting the fruit off of the branches. Also, it was OK to eat tangerines while picking and a plastic bag was provided in which to dispose the peels. For those who wanted to take home some of the fruit, a different plastic bag (with handles) could be purchased at the orchard entrance (small bag = 450 yen, medium bag = 900 yen, etc.). The orchard also had boxes and mailing forms for sending tangerines via parcel post. On the day we did Mikan-Gari, the November weather was sunny and cool, and it was very refreshing and relaxing to wander among the tangerine trees, picking and eating the fruits. We hope you will have the chance to enjoy the wonderful agricultural lands located to the south of Yokosuka City.
