In preparation for the New Year, houses and apartments will be deep cleaned, in a way that almost has the feeling of purification.  In addition to sweeping, wiping, and vacuuming away the previous year's dirt and dust, clothing and bedding will also be washed.  Traditional kimonos will be taken out of the closet and made ready to be worn during New Year's first prayer visits (初詣, hatsu mo-de) to shrines or temples. In previous articles (see the links below) we looked at how laundry is typically done in Japan.  Many houses and apartments are equipped with clothes driers, but they are much smaller and less powerful that typical American machines.  So, the best way to use the Japanese clothes drier is to first hang things out in the air until they are mostly dry, and then put them in the drying machine.  Depending on the weather, clothing can be hung on poles out on the balcony (which exists for that purpose) or hung inside your rooms on collapsible laundry frames/hangars.  For larger items like coats, suits, blankets, etc., there are dry cleaners which are located both inside and outside the U.S. Navy Base (CFAY).  The January weather in the Yokosuka City and Miura Peninsula areas tends to be sunny and very dry, so it is a perfect time for doing deep-cleaning and laundry.
