Yokosuka City is located, south of Yokohama and Tokyo on the Miura Peninsula, which has lots of natural greenery, hills, and farming areas (see link at bottom for more information). The population of Yokosuka is around 390,000, with most of residents living in the east side, where there are civilian and naval harbor facilities facing Tokyo Bay. Due to the convenience of having two passenger rail lines, "JR" (Japan Railways) and "Keikyu" (Keihin Kyuko), many people live in Yokosuka, but commute to jobs "up the tracks" in Yokohama, Kawasaki, or Tokyo. In addition to Yokosuka, three other municipalities are located on the peninsula. To the northwest, facing Sagami Bay, is Zushi City. Zushi has a population of around 87,00 and is known as a seaside resort area, with a beach, yacht marina, windsurfing, and paddle-boarding, etc. It is easy to access from Yokosuka, either by car, bus, or riding the JR train line. Of note, U.S. Navy's "Ikego Family Housing Area" is located Zushi. Also facing Sagami Bay, and just south of Zushi City, is Hayama Town -- it shares the same scenic ambience as Yokosuka's western coast (see link at bottom). Hayama is a high-class residence & resort area, with small beaches, views of Mount Fuji, a posh yacht marina, and famous country club/golf course. Hayama's population is around 33,000 -- and it is well-noted for hosting the Japanese Emperor's Summer Villa. Beginning in the late-19th century, and partly due to the prestige of the Imperial Villa, Hayama became the location for the summer homes of upper-class people from Tokyo, and its popularity continued with actors, artists, and wealthy expatriates. To the south of Yokosuka, is Miura City, which has a population of around 44,000 people. Much of Miura City's land area is given over to agriculture, where crops are grown year-round. At the southernmost point of Miura City and the Peninsula is Misaki Port, which is a major location for Japan's tuna fishing fleets to unload their catches. Joga-Shima Park, with its spectacular cliffs and rock formations facing out to the Pacific Ocean, is a popular destination for sightseers & day-drivers from Tokyo. We hope you will have the chance to explore these unique neighboring areas located around Yokosuka.
