Commercial Facilities in Yokosuka

In Yokosuka City, the commercial center and retail shopping area is concentrated around Yokosuka Chuo train station (which is part of the Keihin Kyuko railway which connects up to Yokohama and Tokyo -- see link at bottom). Parking around the station is available, but limited & expensive; so, many residents ride buses down from the surrounding hills/suburbs to do their shopping. Back in the 1950s-1980s era, multi-story department stores were very popular and often located close to train stations. The Japanese names for those stores were: デパート/DEH-PA-TO (short for department) or 百貨店/HYAKKA-TEN (literally "a store which sells 100 different items"). In recent years, department stores have faced increased competition from shopping malls and "big box" stores, which have convenient access/parking lots and offer a wide variety of products -- a popular large shopping mall in Yokosuka is "Coaska Bayside Stores" (see link at bottom). Despite the tough competition department stores have survived due to customer loyalty and by bringing many specialty stores into their buildings. A good example of this is "Mores City" department store, which is located right next to Yokosuka Chuo station. It is owned by the Okadaya Corporation, which was founded in Kawasaki City back in 1890. More's City in Yokosuka was opened for business in 1997 and is housed in a nine-story building along with a basement. There are around 160 stores and businesses located within More's City, selling clothes, shoes, eyeglasses, stationery, books, cosmetics, dietary supplements, jewelry, etc. In the basement there is a supermarket and drug store. On the 8th and 9th floor are located restaurants serving Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and other types of meals. More's City also hosts a Starbucks coffee shop, which was the first to be opened in Yokosuka. There is a multi-story pay parking lot attached to the building, but it fills-up pretty quickly after the stores open at 10:00 AM. More's City is a great place to go to get a feel for the Japanese "department store"-style shopping experience, going up and down the escalators, exploring what's offered on the different floors, and then sitting down for coffee or a delicious meal. We hope you will often be able to visit and enjoy this famous store in downtown Yokosuka.
