Seasons and culture of Japan

Kannonzaki ( 観音崎 )

There is a beautiful park and scenic area in eastern Yokosuka, facing Tokyo Bay, near Cape Kannon -- called Kannonzaki ( 観音崎 ). It is just a short drive south, along the coastal road from Yokosuka Navy base, and there are several places to park once you arrive there. There are also public buses which go to Kannonzaki. As with several other places in Yokosuka, back in the 19th Century, some of the hills and bluffs were used for military purposes, with coastal defense batteries being built around Kannonzaki. The verdant hills there are also the source of a large number of active/powerful natural springs, which were developed by the Japanese Shogunate government into a water works for the city and naval installations (for more details, see the link at the bottom). Nowadays, Kannonzaki is the site of a large park which is managed by Kanagawa Prefectural Government. The park has well-maintained hiking trails, a small beach/swimming area, tide pools, a few eateries, and picnic spots. Also located in Kannonzaki are Yokosuka Museum of Art, Kannonzaki Lighthouse, and Kannonzaki Nature Museum. Of interest, Tatara Beach is located right by the Nature Museum, and on the promenade, you will be able to find a large "dinosaur-like" footprint, which is said to be where the monster, Godzilla, first stepped onto land, after it emerged from Tokyo Bay. There are many spots for scenic viewing, with one particular attraction being able to do some "ship-watching", since Kannozaki faces the Uraga Channel entrance to Tokyo Bay, which is the busiest sea lane in Japan. We hope you will get the chance to explore and enjoy this wonderful leisure area while living in Yokosuka.
