Japanese culture and food

"DON-BURI" (丼)

There are many types of traditional foods prepared and eaten in Japan. For foreigners, there are some Japanese foods which might be considered exotic or unusual (e.g., sliced raw sea cucumber), and it takes a while to develop a taste for them. But there are others which are accessible and delicious comfort foods for both Japanese and foreigners. A good example is the traditional fast food "DON-BURI" (丼) or Rice Bowl. Of note, we introduced DON-BURI in a previous article, which is linked at the bottom. Basically, it's a deep bowl of rice with a stewed-meat or stir-fried topping. One of the best examples of this food genre is: OYA-KO DON (親子丼) ... OYA-KO means "parent & child", and is a bowl of rice topped with chicken (親/OYA) and eggs (子/KO). It is cheap, easy to prepare and totally yummy, and has been a popular favorite in Japan since the olden days. The basic recipe is to cook several bite-sized pieces of chicken meat in a small pan, along with thinly-sliced onions, sake, sugar, soy sauce and some other spices/ingredients. Once the mixture is bubbling hot, eggs are stirred in, and when the desired consistency is reached, it is all poured on top of the freshly-cooked rice in the DON-BURI bowl. We hope you will have the chance to eat OYA-KO DON while you live here!
