A Port Market in the Sea Breeze

A Port Market in the Sea Breeze

A commercial facility with many shops called "Port Market", which uses the keyword "food experience", has reopened after a few years of renovation work. It is located about a 10-minute walk from the back entrance (Womble gate) of Yokosuka Navy Base. At this facility, visitors can enjoy various types of fresh & delicious cuisine such as Misaki tuna, Hayama beef, and Miura vegetables -- all of which are produced in the Miura Peninsula area. Port Market also includes famous local restaurants such as "Honey Bee" hamburger shop, and "Marlowe", which is well-known for its pudding deserts served in glass cups. These and other eateries are located within a very spacious & splendid food court.

The walls and ceilings in Port Market's interior have been built so as to remove obstructions and maximize the feeling of openness. As a result, this roomy design helps to maintain relaxed feeling, even when there are crowds of people around. Also, the numerous tables and chairs in the food court are relatively large and situated in such a way that all kinds of customers can enjoy eating without feeling cramped.

One of the most popular eateries that just opened in Port Market is Yokosuka's long-established & well-known Honey Bee. This is an American-style food restaurant, which is also located right across the street from the main gate of Yokosuka Navy Base. Here you can try Yokosuka's famous "Navy Burger." It, along with other restaurants, is located near the Port Market food court areas; so, for example, you can bring your purchased meal items outside to the terrace section and enjoy eating in the fresh ocean breeze.

While in Port Market, you can purchase and enjoy a wide variety of tasty foods, such as: well-marbled Misaki tuna meat, fresh Shonan "shirasu" (baby sardines), a luxurious "Kaisei-don" seafood rice bowl topped with a generous portion of fresh seasonal fish, hot ramen noodles in a delicious broth made from cooked shellfish, and Italian-style fast-food. All of these can be bought conveniently, as if just stopping-by during a casual stroll.

Of course, in addition to eating at the restaurants, you can buy take-away groceries and food products, such as vegetables, tuna & seafood, and various meats. An attractive feature of Port Market is that a lot of the food products come from nearby by farms and fisheries, so they are very fresh due to shorter transportation times. If you are planning a holiday barbecue or special dinner, it may be a good idea to buy some of your ingredients at Port Market!

There is a special section of booths where souvenirs and gifts for tourists are available for purchase. Also on sale are some locally famous Yokosuka sweets/confections. One particular booth has a line-up of alcoholic beverages produced under the name of Yokosuka -- located on a shelf, there is: shochu (Japanese vodka-like spirit), wine, and sake (Nihon-shu rice wine.) Even long-time Yokosuka residents might be able to find a "hidden gem" local specialty product.

There is a large, 200-car-sized, parking lot located adjacent to, and right across the street from, Port Market. It is very convenient to use for visitors -- even those with small children -- when they come for eating or shopping. In addition, if purchases are made in the facility, one hour of free parking is provided.

With the current depreciation of the yen, now is a great chance for foreign customers to enjoy shopping or expensive meals at reasonable prices. Port Market is also expected to be used as a venue to create good memories of Japan, as special events and workshops will be scheduled to occur on weekends.
