oyako-don 親子丼 (chicken and egg topping)

We may think of "fast food" as something that has only been developed and served in Western countries during modern times. However, in Japan, an inexpensive type of fast food called "donburi" (丼ぶり) was created in olden-days Tokyo, over three hundred years ago. Basically, a donburi meal consists of a deep bowl, filled with cooked rice, and topped with meat, eel, or eggs, etc. It could be produced quickly and simply, and became a best-seller in the 19th century, as Japanese began to eat more meat. Nowadays, popular donburi (shortened to "don" 丼) meals are: oyako-don 親子丼 (chicken and egg topping), katsu-don かつ丼 (pork cutlet topping), and gyu-don 牛丼 (shaved beef topping). There are three big Japanese companies which specialize in gyu-don ("beef bowl") fast food meals: Yoshinoya, Matsuya, and Sukiya; and all of them have restaurants in various locations around the Yokosuka and Miura Peninsula area. Many of these beef bowl restaurants are situated along main roads, with free parking, and also offer meals to-go. So, once you are settled-in to your new Japanese house, make sure to go out and try Japan's original, cheap, and tasty, donburi fast food
