Year End Gifts

The popular "COASKA Bayside Stores" shopping mall is located close to Yokosuka Navy Base/CFAY -- (see the links below for more information).  Starting in late-November, visitors to the mall will notice a special merchandise section set-up near the entrance to the AEON supermarket.  There are multiple shelves/racks which display a wide variety of small boxes, each packed with neatly arranged high quality food and consumer products.  The gift boxes are sized & designed to be delivered via parcel post/mail.  They contain products such as beer, coffee, cooking oil, gourmet food sets (meat, seafood), fruit, sweets, ham, canned goods, laundry detergent, soaps, etc.  Nearby the gift box shelves/racks, there are some tables and chairs set-up for customers to sit down with store staff to fill out orders & mailing forms.  All of this sales activity is part of a Japanese year-end gift giving tradition called: "Oseibo" (お歳暮).  Generally, the gifts are sent with the intention to show gratitude for support received throughout the past year and to extend wishes for continued positive relationships in the coming year.  The Oseibo tradition, began in ancient times as ancestral spirit offerings but evolved during the Edo period (1603-1868) into showing gratitude to superiors, clients, and family, and became a widespread practice by the Meiji era (1868-1912) for thanking those who helped you, like teachers and superiors.  As the year comes to an end, Japanese people become busy with various activities to prepare for the following New Year.  In addition to Oseibo gift giving, some will send out "Nenga-jo" (年賀状) New Year's greeting post cards (kind of like Christmas cards in the West), and then there's the requirement to thoroughly clean one's home so no "old dirt" is carried over into the New Year.  We hope you will enjoy this special season in Japan.
