Washing clothes is a recurring chore in our daily lives.  In the U.S., it is relatively common to have an easy-to-use large washing machine, and a separate drier, located side-by-side.  Due to cheaper electricity, the Western-style drier has the capacity to efficiently handle large loads or clothing, sheets, towels, etc., and remove the moisture completely.  However, the situation is different in Japan where electric power is lower voltage, more expensive, and there is less space in houses or apartments where washers and driers can be installed.  So, as a result, Japanese washing machines are smaller, and laundry is mostly hang-dried (vice using the machine).  Washing machines are top-loaded or front loaded, and there are models which have built-in (limited) drier functions.  In some of the rental homes which our company manages, a washing machine is installed by the property owner.  In other cases, a loaner washing machine might be provided by Yokosuka Navy Base (CFAY) Housing Office, or laundry systems can be purchased at local home improvement stores.  Whichever washing machine is in your rental unit, our company employees will explain & advise how to use it properly.  Of note, one thing to be careful about is to make sure to periodically clean out the filter.  Another best practice is to regularly use the machine's "self-cleaning" function, and, for some washers, there are special detergents which can be used for that purpose.  Water leakage, mold build-up, and other problems can occur if Japanese washing machines are not properly maintained & cleaned.  If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact our company -- we will be happy to explain.
