Symbols of Yokosuka City

Yokosuka City started out as collection of small fishing & agricultural settlements located on the Miura Peninsula, south of Tokyo.  Yokosuka Village was elevated to Town status in 1878, and it continued to grow with the development of bases and facilities supporting the Japanese Imperial Navy -- (for more information, see the links below).  In 1907, Yokosuka was elevated to City status.  A few years later, in 1912, Yokosuka City government approved the selection of an official Emblem, shown below.  The center of the harmonious design incorporates the first letters of the city name "Yo-ko" (using katakana characters: /yo and /ko -- note: the ko is reversed).  The "Yo-ko" characters are stylistically combined in a circular shape inspired by the ancient Miura clan's "Mitsuhiki/3-Lines" family crest.  (Note: The Miura samurai clan ruled over the Yokosuka area during the years from 1000~1500 AD).  The surrounding 8-pointed star is meant to depict a navigational compass for ships and symbolizes Yokosuka's role as an important port city.  Of interest, in addition to normal administrative uses, Yokosuka's emblem can sometimes be seen as part of the designs (usually in the center) on manhole covers and rainwater street drains, etc. (see link at the bottom).  We hope you can understand, and will have a chance to see, Yokosuka City's official emblem.
