In Japan, the third Monday in July is a national holiday called" "Marine (Ocean) Day". It creates a three-day weekend and marks the beginning of the hot summer season, as well as the start of school summer vacation. In the case of Yokosuka this year, summer vacation will last from 22 July until the 28th of August. Many local beaches around Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula will open for swimming and ocean-related leisure activities -- this opening tradition is called "Umi Biraki" (海開き). One special characteristic of many Japanese ocean swimming beaches is the temporary construction of small buildings where visitors can change clothes, shower, eat & drink, rent beach equipment, etc. -- these structures are called "Umi No Ie" (海の家), and the link provided below explains more about them. Of interest, a large and accessible beach located to the south of Yokosuka, facing Tokyo Bay, is called: "Miura Kaigan". What makes Miura Kaigan unique compared to other local beaches is that it is possible to visit there either via train or by car (several pay parking lots line the beach area). So, either get on the Keihin Kyuko train at Yokosuka Chuo or Shioiri stations and head south to Miura Kaigan Station (which is a short walking distance from the beach) or drive down coastal Highway 134 to get there. This year, Miura City government has taken the lead on managing the beach leisure area. Large shade tents and food trucks & booths, etc., will be set-up. Of interest, back in the 1960s, Miura Kaigan was developed by the Keihin Kyuko Electric Railroad Company as a resort area called "Blue Daytona Beach", and during the 1970s, tens of thousands of visitors from Tokyo and Yokohama would jam the beach on summer weekends. In its heyday, specially scheduled "beach express" trains would carry people directly from Tokyo down to Miura Kaigan station. The crowds are much smaller nowadays, and we hope you will have a chance to visit this famous large beach area conveniently located near Yokosuka City. Written by Goodfield
