Beginning in late March and continuing through the first couple weeks of April, Sakura (桜, cherry blossom) trees go through a process where flower buds grow, then bloom for a while, and finally fall off during springtime rains and winds. Japanese people really enjoy the beauty of the Sakura flowers and will take pictures and have picnics by the trees. The relatively short time of the blooming period also raises a sense or discernment of life's impermanence, which the Japanese call: "Mujo" (無常). Mujo is a feeling of gentle sadness or wistfulness about the transience of things, and it comes in part from the Buddhist religion's influence, and perhaps also from many centuries of living on volcanic islands where frequent earthquakes change the everyday normality of life. There is a Japanese saying which relates to this feeling which goes as follows: 無常の風は時を選ばず ("Mujo no kaze wa toki wo era-bazu"), and it can be translated as: "The winds of impermanence never choose a time". Similar proverbs in English are: "It is the unexpected which can always be expected", or "Nothing succeeds like success". Towards the end of April, the focus in Japan shifts towards the prospect of taking some hard-earned time off and going on vacations -- sometimes to overseas locations. The opportunity to do this is provided by a series of near-consecutive holidays called "Golden Week", and for more information about this, please click on the link below. We hope you will enjoy the short temperate springtime weather in Yokosuka and the Miura Peninsula -- full of green hills scenery -- before the arrival of the rainy season and later on the hot & humid summer.
