Japan has recently become a magnet for tourism, with vacationers from foreign countries arriving in record numbers. There is much to see and do here and the cheap yen exchange rate has made things very affordable. Exotic and delicious Japanese food is one of the big attractions and can be enjoyed at the numerous restaurants in the Yokosuka City and Miura Peninsula areas. One interesting dining/menu option offered at some eateries is: 食べ放題 -- "Ta-be-ho-dai", which basically means "all you can eat". The way the system usually works is that the restaurant or pub will have a special menu from which food items can be ordered for a set price, ranging from 2000 yen to 6000 yen. The Ta-be-ho-dai meal will have a time limit of 90 minutes or so, and during that time period one can order as much food, as many times, as desired. Also, once the meal commences, and afterwards, restaurant staff will keep diners informed of how much time remains. A similar/related menu option is 飲み放題 -- "Nomi-ho-dai", which means "all you can drink". A menu of available soft and alcoholic beverages is used for ordering drinks while eating the food for 90 minutes. Needless to say, one has to be careful not to overeat or imbibe too much, but it is quite hassle-free and relaxing to enjoy a "flow" of food and drink for a fixed price for 90 minutes. Of interest, Ta-ba-ho-dai and Nomi-ho-dai menus are generally available at Japanese "Yaki-niku" barbecue restaurants (see link below). Also, we recently visited and reviewed a Ta-be-ho-dai meal at a local "Shabu-shabu" restaurant, and that report is also linked below. We hope you will be able to enjoy this type of dining experience while you live in Yokosuka!
