Ramen

For those who have never tried it, one way to describe the very popular food item called "RAMEN" (ラーメン) is spaghetti-like noodles served in a bowl of soup.  Of course, since the advent of instant RAMEN, contained in a disposable cup into which hot water is added, almost everyone around the world knows about, or has eaten, this noodle-based meal.  However, the most delicious RAMEN is made with fresh ingredients, prepared by a skillful cook.  There are many RAMEN restaurants in the Yokosuka City and Miura Peninsula areas, and several are located just a short walking distance from the main gate of the Navy Base (CFAY).  Additionally, with today's smart-phone technology, a quick map search will reveal the location and details of the various eateries around town which serve RAMEN.  For more detailed/deep-dive information about RAMEN, please click on the links provided at the bottom.  There are basically four types of RAMEN -- each with its own distinctive tasting soup.  (1) SHOYU RAMEN -- Clear brown broth flavored with soy sauce (shoyu).  (2) SHIO RAMEN -- Light gold/clear (chicken) broth flavored with salt.  (3) MISO RAMEN -- Thick/complex brown soup flavored with fermented soybean paste.  (4) TONKOTSU RAMEN -- Cloudy-white tasty soup made from boiled-down pork bones.  Most of the smaller RAMEN shops have an easy-to-use ticket machine by the entrance, where you put in coins and push a button for the type of RAMEN you want to eat.  One more thing -- RAMEN is eaten with chopsticks and a "REN-GE" spoon, and it is perfectly OK to slurp your noodles!  We hope you will have the chance to eat and enjoy this wonderful food while you live in Japan.
