Living in Japan

Loss of Electric Power

During summer and early-autumn large cyclonic storms called typhoons (台風) approach Japan, bringing high winds and heavy rains.  In a past article we explained about some ways to prepare for the arrival of a typhoon storm -- especially to avoid water damage to your home.  The article is linked below.  One problem which can occur during and after a typhoon is temporary loss of electric power.  Such outages tend to be caused by strong winds blowing down or damaging power lines.  So, it is good to be prepared in case your house temporarily "goes dark".  One thing to stock-up on is batteries and phone chargers.  Some Japanese will also use candles (and lighter/matches) at night to minimize battery use.  Flashlights, electric lanterns, and other portable light sources are also recommended.  One thing which also can be a big problem is the loss of power to your refrigerator and the food inside going bad.  Some Japanese disaster preparedness experts recommend filling up plastic drink bottles with water and then freezing them.  If/when power is lost, those "ice bottles" can be placed inside the refrigerator to help keep things cool (also, make sure not to open the door too often).  The good news is that Japanese power companies are very experienced and skilled at repairing and fixing, so it is usually not too long before electricity is restored.  But a rule of thumb is to be ready to cope with no power in your home for 24~48 hours.  There is plenty of warning (several days) before a typhoon hits, so we hope you will be able to use that time to prepare and be safe in your home.
