100 Yen Store in Japan

Yokosuka Navy Base (CFAY) is uniquely located right next to a vibrant downtown commercial district.  So, there are many shops, restaurants, pubs and other leisure-oriented businesses located just a short walk from the main gate of CFAY.  One fascinating and convenient type of retail/discount store is called: "Hyakkin" (百均) or "Hyaku En Shop" (百円ショップ) ... in English: 100 Yen Store.  As the name suggests, Hyakkin sell a wide variety of products for 100 yen.  They also offer a few more expensive items for 300 or 500 yen.  But all-in-all, the emphasis is on cheap & convenient goods which can be used in your house or daily life.  Discount marketing is not new in Japan, and actually started back in olden days/17th century Edo (current Tokyo).  The first modern-type 100 Yen Store was established in 1985.  The variety of products on sale in the Hyaku En Shops is truly amazing and includes categories like tableware, kitchenware, tools, garden ware, stationery, toys, household goods, leisure/party goods, packaged foods and drinks, etc.  It is quite easy to lose track of time as you wander through the aisles with shelves packed-full of consumer items -- some of which you may not have known you needed before entering the store.  There are several companies which operate chains of Hyakkin, and three of the most popular are: "DAISO", "SERIA", and "CAN DO".  Luckily, all three of these businesses have branch outlets located close by Yokosuka Navy Base.  There is a DAISO store situated in the Coaska shopping mall (see link below).  The Saikaya Shopping Center in downtown Yokosuka contains a SERIA store.  Finally, the Mikasa Shopping Street (see link below) hosts a CAN DO store.  We hope you will be able to enjoy this unique shopping experience while living in Japan.
