Just a short walking distance from the back gate (Womble Gate) of Yokosuka Navy Base (CFAY), is a nice park which has been built around an old battleship from Japan's Imperial Navy. The memorial battleship (which is also a museum) is named "MIKASA", and it is very famous in Japan. More information on MIKASA is provided at a link below. The park surrounding MIKASA is a great place to visit, with walking paths, places to sit, and green grass areas with ocean views. For many years there was a large & specially designed water fountain area which played music -- however, it recently was closed for repairs. Located nearby the battleship is a small gift store which sells memorabilia, flags, posters, fans, and other souvenirs, as well as packets of "Navy Curry", soft drinks, beer and sake, etc. MIKASA park also serves as the host site for a large annual Curry Rice festival, which usually occurs during the month of May, and visitors from all over the country come to the park to taste & enjoy many different versions of the spicy comfort food. Musical events and performances are regularly played at an open-air amphitheater, which is another unique and enjoyable feature of the park. Finally, located adjacent to the entrance of the park is the ferry service to Saru-Shima (Monkey Island), which is the only natural island inside Tokyo Bay, and a popular tourist attraction in Yokosuka. More information about Saru-Shima and the ferry rides can be found at the two links at the bottom. MIKASA Park has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Urban & Historic Parks, and we hope you will get the chance to visit and enjoy it! Written by Good field
