Yokosuka has a less populated western coastal district, which faces Sagami Bay (with great views of distant Mount Fuji) -- and there are also many hilly and even rural/agricultural areas in the central and southern areas of the city. However, it is the eastern district of Yokosuka, which faces Tokyo Bay, where most of the people live and businesses are concentrated. It might be called the "downtown/harbor" commercial area, and it is concentrated around the Navy base complex and the two major train stations: JR Yokosuka Station and Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo Station. The U.S. Navy's large base (officially called: CFAY -- Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka) is very unique among U.S. military bases in Japan in that it is located in the middle of the downtown/harbor district, so shopping and entertainment are located only a short walk away outside the base gates. There are plenty of dining options in the downtown area including American fast food favorites Burger King, McDonalds, and Kentucy Fried Chicken. A real good way to sample a traditional Japanese shopping arcade is to simply take a leisurely walk through Mikasa Shoten-Gai, which is a covered street hosting a wide variety of retail businesses (see link below). Also, right next to Yokosuka Chuo train station is a typical large department store called More's City (see link below). Of note, CFAY's base newspaper "Seahawk/Umitaka" (link below) is a handy resource which, among lots of other information, lists off-base events, such as parades, concerts, and festivals, etc. -- and some of those occur in the Yokosuka downtown/harbor area, so please take note and enjoy the bustling Japanese activities just outside of the base.
