HEISEI-CHO (平成町)

Japanese cities and towns are divided into districts or neighborhoods, called: "CHO" (町). So, for example, located close to the U.S. Navy Base (CFAY) are HON-CHO (本町), SHIOIRI-CHO (汐入町), OGAWA-CHO (小川町), and OTAKI-CHO (大滝町). In this article we will take a look at HEISEI-CHO (平成町), which is only about a five-minute drive from the base and has lots of convenient attractions. Like much of the other flat areas in eastern Yokosuka City facing Tokyo Bay, HEISEI-CHO is built on land reclaimed from the sea. Yokosuka's natural topography is full of hills, bluffs, and small valleys -- called: YATO (谷戸, for more details, see the link at the bottom). So, over a long time, in order to develop more level areas for building businesses and homes, several large land reclamation projects were completed in Yokosuka. The plan for the HEISEI-CHO landfill construction was created in 1964, and it was basically completed by 1993. In the years which followed, HEISEI-CHO area was transformed into a modern & vibrant urban area with shopping centers, a large park, restaurants, fitness gym, a prefectural university, and high-rise condominiums. There are two supermarket/general shopping centers called: LIVIN and AVE -- both with roomy parking lots. A large "DIY" (Do It Yourself) and furniture store called HOMES, also with ample parking, is located in HEISEI-CHO (see link at the bottom for more details). Then there is the unique green space area called UMI-KAZE KOEN (うみかぜ公園, Sea Breeze Park), where visitors can put up tents, do barbecues, fly a kite, use the children's playground, fish from the sea wall, etc. -- and there is also an area specially equipped for skateboarding, basketball, and BMX biking. We hope you will have a chance to visit and enjoy this easily accessible & leisure-oriented area of Yokosuka.
