京浜急行 "Keihin Kyuko" (or "Kei-Kyu")

Yokosuka City is located on the Miura Peninsula and is the southernmost urban area of the huge Tokyo mega-City. Due to the large and concentrated population, over the years, various forms of public transportation have been developed, in addition to driving private automobiles. Once you live in Yokosuka, you will soon notice numerous buses and taxis, and also commuter trains. There are two train lines which run through Yokosuka and every day they carry thousands of people who commute to jobs in Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Tokyo. In this article, we will look at 京浜急行 "Keihin Kyuko" (or "Kei-Kyu"), which is a private railway with electric-powered express trains connecting Yokosuka north to Tokyo, Haneda Airport, and countless other places in Japan's vast & inter-connected railway network. The two Kei-Kyu stations which are both located short walking distances from the main gate of U.S. Navy's Yokosuka Base (CFAY) are: 横須賀中央 Yokosuka Chuo and Shioiri 汐入. Yokosuka Chuo is where you can catch super express trains which transport passengers up to Tokyo's major Shinagawa (品川) station in less than an hour, and it is located right in the middle of Yokosuka's downtown entertainment and shopping districts. Shioiri station is conveniently situated across the street from the large "Coaska Bay Stores" shopping mall (for more details, see the link at the bottom). Travelling by car is possible and there is a good expressway system available; however, trains are very convenient, and you don't have to worry about where to park. Like other Japanese trains, KEI-KYU's rail cars are clean and quiet -- and everything runs on-time, according to schedule. The only downside is that during the morning and evening rush hours, things get pretty crowded, with standing-room-only conditions. Finally, while tickets can still be purchased at the station entrances, most people now use digital money cards, called "PASMO" or "SUICA", which make boarding the trains (or buses) very quick and efficient -- we will look at these cards more closely in a future article. We hope you will enjoy doing some daytrips using the trains!
