宵寝 朝起き 長者 の 基 (YOI-NE ASA-OKI CHO-JA NO MOTO)

This week's Japanese proverb is: 宵寝 朝起き 長者 の 基 (YOI-NE ASA-OKI CHO-JA NO MOTO). 宵寝/YOI-NE = go to bed in early evening, 朝起き/ASA-OKI = get up in early morning, 長者/CHO-JA = a millionaire, and 基/MOTO = basis or cause. So, these Kanji characters combine to say something like: "If you want to become rich some day, sleep during early evening, and wake during early morning." It is a good saying which Japanese use to remind themselves that success often comes as the result of being diligent and self-disciplined. A famous Western proverb which has a similar meaning is: "Early to bed, early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy, and wise."
