Tori-gin restaurant

The location of Yokosuka Navy Base (CFAY) is close to lots of places to shop, dine, and have fun.  The base (and naval harbor area) lies adjacent to eastern Yokosuka City's main population center and business/commercial district, built-up on the flat land areas which were expanded over many decades through landfill construction projects.  There are many restaurants to choose from in the downtown area -- all of them a short walking distance from the Navy base, so you do not need to use a car.  "Tori-gin" (鳥ぎん), in the Yonega-hama District, next to Keihin Kyuko Yokosuka Chuo train station, is a wonderful restaurant for eating traditional Japanese cuisine.  Sitting on either side of the front door are two large stone frog statues -- so, they are like easily recognizable landmarks for the establishment.  Upon entering, go up to the roomy second floor, where there are various sized Western & Japanese-style tables and chairs.  The menu (as with many Japanese eateries nowadays) is on an iPad-type electronic tablet, with an option to use English -- so, ordering is easy.  The "Tori" in Tori-gin means chicken -- and one of the restaurant's specialties is small pieces of poultry meat skewered on bamboo sticks and then grilled -- called "Yaki-tori".  The restaurant also serves fired fish, other sea foods, and raw fish slices (Sashimi) -- as well as Japanese sake, shochu, beer, and other drinks.  Of special note though is another dish called: "Kama-meshi" (釜めし), for which Tori-gin is famous.  Kama-meshi literally means “kettle rice,” and it is a traditional Japanese dish cooked and served in an iron or ceramic pot known as a “kama”.  Rice goes into the bottom of the pot and then combinations of various ingredients (fish, pork, beef, chicken vegetables, etc.) are placed on top of the rice -- all of it then slow-cooked to delicious perfection.  A couple of links below provide more information about Kama-meshi.  We hope you will get a chance to visit Tori-gin and enjoy a traditional Japanese-style lunch or dinner.
