Curry Rice Festival

As you may know, Yokosuka is a city which grew up around a very large Japanese Imperial Navy Base, and after the end of World War II, the U.S. Navy arrived, and it uses some of the harbor facilities through the present day.  A healthy staple dish which was served aboard ships of the old Japanese Navy was a type of beef & vegetable stew, spiced with curry, and poured on top of rice -- called カレーライス ("kah-reh ra-isu", curry rice -- see link below for more details).  Curry rice continues to be served, every Friday, in Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) ships and shore units.  Of note, curry rice has been formally designated as Yokosuka City's official food, and this year, from 09:00~15:00, on Saturday, 11 October, a public event called: "Yokosuka Curry Festival 2025" will be held in Verny Park (located a short walk north of Yokosuka Navy Base/CFAY).  For more information about Verny Park, please click on the link at the bottom.  The Curry Festival will feature dozens of booths, each selling their own recipes & variations of the dish.  Additionally, many types of popular deep-fried or baked bread rolls with curry fillings -- called カレーパン (kah-reh pan) will be sold.  It is best to go to this gourmet festival with an empty stomach and good appetite.  Of interest, located right next to Verny Park is JMSDF's Yokosuka District Base, and it will be open for visitors on 11 October -- so, that will be a chance to go on board and tour inside JMSDF warships.  If there is bad weather, the events will be cancelled.  Also, there is no parking, so best to use public transportation or just walk over to Verny Park.  We hope you will have a chance to experience & enjoy this unique public event.
