The U.S. Navy Base in Yokosuka (CFAY) hosts a large commissary where many American-brand food items can be purchased for a reasonable price.  Shopping there is convenient and fresh produce and frozen foods are also available.  Outside of the base, there are many large supermarkets which offer various Japanese processed food items, as well as large selections of delicious seafood (including raw dishes of sushi and sashimi), and bakeries which sell all kinds of freshly made breads and pastries, etc.  So, while the on-base commissary offers all of the basic necessities, shopping off base is chance to buy a variety of unique and different foods and household products.  In this regard, there a couple "specialty" groceries stores, which are located a short walking distance from the base and are worth checking out.  One is called: "Seijo Ishii", and it is located on the first floor of the Saikaya Shopping Center (note: a supermarket, York Mart, is in the basement).  Seijo Ishii carries some foreign imported brands of foods, teas, spices & condiments, and wines/alcoholic drinks -- as well as a deli section which sells bento boxes, salads, processed meats and cheeses, etc.  The other specialty grocery store is called: "Kaldi", and it is located in the basement floor of More's City shopping center, right next to Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo train (note: Suzuki-Ya supermarket is also in More's City).  Kaldi offers many foreign food items & wines (like Siejo Ishii), but it also has a large & special section which concentrates on fresh bean (and ground) coffees.  Kaldi offers free small cups of coffee to all customers who visit their store.  For more information about these stores please click on the links below.  We hope you will enjoy shopping for interesting groceries outside of Yokosuka Navy Base.         Written by Goodfield
