Many convenient appliances have been developed in Japan, which can help keep the air inside homes both clean and comfortable. These appliances tend to be small/medium-sized and portable, and are designed to be placed in a room to circulate the air. So, for example, during the cold and dry winter months, "Kashitsu-ki" (加湿機) humidifiers can be used. During the warm and humid rainy season & summer months, "Joshitsu-ki" (除湿機) dehumidifiers can be used. Additionally, many Japanese will open all the windows in the morning to let in a fresh breeze and "air out" the rooms -- this ventilation is called "Kanki" (換気). Another household system/appliance is used to clean the air, and is called "Kuki Seijo-ki" (空気清浄機) air purifier. Yokosuka City and the Miura Peninsula are located on the southern edge of the world's largest city, Tokyo. So, although the situation is vastly improved compared to the 1960s~1970s when there were serious air pollution problems, there still can be occasions when smog-like conditions can emerge. Also, during spring, pollen spreading from cedar & cypress forests in the nearby mountains causes discomfort for people who suffer from hay fever. From March to May there are clouds of light dust which blow over to Japan from China, called "Kosa" (黄砂) yellow sand. Using a combination of the above mentioned appliances Japanese people will strive to maintain good air quality in their homes. By the way, air purifiers have many advanced functions -- for more information, please click on the links below. We hope you will enjoy living in your Japanese house/apartment, and if you have any questions please contact us.
