Seasons and culture of Japan

Hungry tiger

In modern times, Japanese people have come to eat more meat along with their vegetable-heavy diets.  Hamburger sandwiches are now very popular, and in the Yokosuka City and Miura Peninsula areas hamburgers are sold in fast food restaurants like McDonald's, Burger King, and MOS Burger.  There is also the "Navy Burger" which is an "official gourmet food item" of Yokosuka and is produced and sold in several small restaurants (see link below).  Another variation is the ハンバーガー (HAN-BA-GA), which is served without a bun, like a steak.  HAN-BA-GA's are very tasty, since the ground beef is mixed with other ingredients such as minced onion/garlic, breadcrumbs, and various seasonings -- sort of like meatloaf.  One restaurant which specializes in HAN-BA-GA's is "Hungry Tiger".  It is located on the 9th Floor of the "More's City" high-rise shopping mall located right next to Keikyu Yokosuka Chuo train station.  The menus in Hungry Tiger are printed in both Japanese and English, with pictures of all the food items, so ordering is easy.  Many foreigners eat at there, and the restaurant staff is able to use/understand English.  After ordering, the HAN-BA-GA meal is brought to the customer's table on a sizzling-hot skillet.  The customer is given a large napkin, half of which is spread on the table and the other half held up to the chin, and the HAN-BA-GA is then placed on top of the napkin on the table while the rest of the napkin protects from meat sizzles.  Hungry Tiger provides gravy for pouring onto the HAN-BA-GA, as well as salt and pepper grinders.  Needless to say, with all of the grilled meat being served, the restaurant has a cozy, smokey atmosphere.  A copy of Hungry Tiger's menu is provided at link below.  We hope you will be able to enjoy eating Japanese-style hamburger steak/HAN-BA-GA, while you live in Japan!
