The most popular type of bread, called 食パン (Shoku-Pan)

Cooked rice is a staple food, eaten almost every day since olden days in Japan.  Agricultural techniques for growing rice were brought to Japan from China or Korea in the 3rd century BC.  Up until that time, the Japanese "Jomon" inhabitants were hunter-gatherers.  In recent years, the consumption of rice has declined as more and more Japanese are eating bread.  The most popular type of bread, called 食パン (Shoku-Pan) is a squarish loaf of white bread, generally sliced into 4, 6, or 8 pieces.  Shoku-pan bread is sized to fit perfectly in toasters and is sold in supermarkets and convenience stores.  There are also specialized bread stores called: パン屋 (Pan-Ya) which sell large varieties of baked goods.  For example, a typical Pan-Ya will offer tradition French-style baguettes, batards, and boules, fresh from the oven.  Additionally, there are various types of rolls containing cheese, meat, jam, and cream, as well as a wide selection of pastries.  A couple of Pan-Ya's are conveniently located within walking distance from Yokosuka Navy Base.  In the More's City "Depa-Chika" (see link below) is "Saint Germain", and near the entrance to Mikasa Shopping Street (see link below) is "Vie De France".  Both of these Pan-Ya's have small cafe areas for dining-in, but most customers get their breads and pastries "to go".  We hope you will have many opportunities to enjoy Pan-Ya bakery goods while you live in Japan!
