Introducing Miura City

In this article, we will take a look at Miura City, which is located to the south of Yokosuka City and shares its name with the green & hilly Miura Peninsula (see link at the bottom). Called Miura-Shi (三浦市) in Japanese, Miura City has a population of around 45,000 people and its economy is mainly based on agriculture and fisheries. Due to the overall mild peninsular climate and good soil, local farmers are able to grow crops all-year-round, and they produce watermelons, broccoli, cabbage, strawberries, "mikan"/tangerines, various other vegetables, and, famously, a large white radish called: "daikon" (see link at bottom for more details). Many people from the large cities up north like to drive down to Miura for the ocean air and scenery, and there are small stalls & markets along the roads where the farmers sell their fresh produce directly to the urbanites (at cheap prices). Down at the southern tip of the peninsula is Misaki Port (三崎港), which serves as a hub for Japan's deep sea fishing industry -- and it is often called: "Maguro no machi" (マグロの町), which means "Tuna Town". A large fish market facility was built there in 2018, and hundreds of large tuna & other fishes are regularly auctioned there for eventual consumption in restaurants in places like Tokyo. Close to Misaki Port is (城ヶ島公園) Joga-shima Park, which is on a small island, connected to the mainland by a large bridge. The park is easy to access via automobile, has parking and is a popular sightseeing (and fishing) destination since its rocky coast offers spectacular views out over the open Pacific Ocean. Further north, along the coast facing Tokyo Bay is Miura Kaigan (三浦海岸), which is a long stretch of sandy beaches where many visitors use for swimming, sunbathing, and windsurfing. On the western coast of Miura City is a small & scenic forest & watershed area with hiking trails called Ko-a-jiro No Mori (古網代の森), which is a great place to go for a family outing. We will take a closer look at some of the attractions in Miura City in future articles, but in the meantime, we hope you will get a chance to visit the area -- just get on the coastal road and head south from Yokosuka and enjoy the drive!
