Seasons and culture of Japan

"Galley Honey Bee"

Recently, a building which contains many restaurants and food stores, was re-opened in Yokosuka following a couple of years of renovation work. It is called "Port Market" and please see the link at the bottom for more information. One of the popular eateries inside Yokosuka's Port Market specializes in making American style cuisine -- it is a branch of a locally famous "hamburger joint", catering to many U.S. Navy sailors, called: "Galley Honey Bee". Honey Bee's main facility was established 1968, in a prime business location, right across the street (Highway 16) from the main gate of the U.S. Navy Base. The restaurant's founder had worked as a chef in a U.S. military kitchen (called "galley") during the 1950s, and used his culinary experience to build the business. The diner-type counter layout at Honey Bee has not changed over the years, and the menu also has remained the same -- there is even an old-style music "juke box" inside the dining area. It is safe to say that a few generations of U.S. military, as well as Japanese, customers have come to enjoy and love the authentic American-style dishes served at Honey Bee. In addition to hamburger sandwiches, the menu includes items such as: bacon-lettuce-tomato (BLT) sandwiches, chili bowls, pizza, fried chicken, and French fries, etc. Also, Honey Bee claims to be the first place in Japan to produce "Stick Dogs" (also called: American Dog or Corn Dog) which were served fresh and "to go" out from a small window near the front entrance. Nowadays, on holiday weekends, many tourists from Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan will often form waiting lines in front of Honey Bee, in order to sample its famous hamburgers. There is no parking available at Honey Bee, but it is just a quick walk across the street from Yokosuka Navy base, so access by foot is most convenient. We hope you will get a chance to enjoy some good American comfort food at this iconic Yokosuka eatery!
